Together with your Sweet Travel Italy assistant have a guided tour of the town. Visit the famous walk of lovers near the lake. Another place not to be missed in Varenna is Piazza San Giorgio, the town’s central square that houses the Church of San Giorgio. The church was built in the 14th century in a style somewhere between Romanesque and Gothic and houses numerous paintings from the late 15th and 16th centuries. As you look down, you can see the solid pavement, made entirely of traditional local black marble

Villa Carlotta is a villa and botanical garden in Tremezzo known for its magnificent gardens and collections of many great sculptors. It is located at the top of a terraced garden, from which there are views of Bellagio and also the mountains surrounding the lake. It consists of three floors (two of which are open to the public). The works of art on display are mainly located on the lower floor, while the upper one, which has an elegant gallery, provides views over the lake. Villa Carlotta was a wedding present. In 1843, Princess Marianna, the wife of Prince Albert of Prussia, bought the property. In 1847, Princess Marianne gave the property to her daughter Charlotte as a wedding present upon her marriage to Georg II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen (1826-1914). The house was re-named Villa Carlotta

Spend some time to taste the local dishes in town

The Melzi d'Eril family was a prominent Milanese aristocratic family in the 18th and 19th centuries. One of the most prominent members of the family was Francesco Melzi d'Eril, who served as Vice-President of the Italian Republic under Napoleon Bonaparte. He was also a renowned collector of art and antiquities and commissioned the construction of a magnificent villa in Bellagio on the shores of Lake Como. The Villa is set in English style gardens enriched by monuments, artefacts (amongst which are a Venetian gondola transported to Bellagio expressly for Napoleon, and two precious Egyptian statues), rare exotic plants, ancient trees, hedges of camellias, groves of azaleas and gigantic rhododendrons, the villa, the chapel and the glass house constitute an ensemble in which the neoclassical style reaches one of its highest peaks. The Villa Melzi d'Eril is now a popular tourist destination and the family's legacy for their contributions to the cultural, political, and economic development of Milan and its surrounding regions continues to be celebrated in Milan and throughout Italy.

The most iconic church of the city is the first place we will go to discover. Highlights inside include Pellegrino Pellegrini’s beautiful altars, sarcophagi of historic archbishops, and Marco d'Agrate’s grisly Saint Bartholomew Flayed (1562) sculpture. The archaeological area down a narrow staircase is also worth a visit. After the visit of the church we climb the famous stairs to the roof. The views are one of the city’s biggest attractions are available as an entirely separate ticket from the cathedral itself. Choose between two different lifts or an energy-sapping climb up a narrow, twisting staircase.
